For residents of Burlington, the idea of free public transit is one step closer to being a reality.
The City of Burlington has recently shared that they are considering a move to eliminate fare on city buses, so anyone who needs to ride local public transit could do so free of charge.
Currently, riders aged 13 and over on Burlington Transit pay $3.50 for a single ride, or $2.75 if paying with a PRESTO card. Children under 12 ride free with a PRESTO card or when accompanied by a paying parent or guardian, and adults ages 65 and up also ride for free.
While looking at the potential impacts of free public transit in Burlington, the city has released a public survey to ask residents in and around Burlington for their views on free bus fare and its potential impacts, both positive and negative.
If brought into effect, this would be a major shift for Burlington’s public transit, and one that could have ripple effects in neighbouring cities.
Currently, Burlington transit also serves as a direct connection to the Hamilton Street Railway, GO Transit, and the Town of Oakville Transit.
