My first encounter with Dave Blanchard was back in 2010. The occasion of our meeting was business-related. He wanted to restore some masonry work at one of his properties, 21 Hunter Street in downtown Hamilton, and he sought my expertise. Our agendas clicked—we both want to preserve and maintain Hamilton’s cultural heritage— and a fruitful partnership was born. Since then, we’ve worked together to carefully restore a handful of landmark buildings in the core of the city we both call home, including the prestigious Landed Banking & Loan Building and The Bank of Montreal — Gowlings Building.
In the intervening years, I’ve gotten to know something of what makes Dave such an important figure in local real estate and to better understand the pivotal role he plays in shaping the living architecture of Hamilton. A buy-and-develop businessperson in a climate that’s grown dangerously enamoured with the buy-and-sit-on- it model, he’s a rarity. He has a local boy’s affection for the past and spends a great deal of energy and effort in maintaining historic properties so that they may endure. But he also possesses the necessary vision to make a mark on the present — and perhaps more essentially— the all-important future. Few could claim a similar legacy.
