Ancaster’s first legal pot shop opened over the weekend

Local cannabis enthusiasts continue to see options of legal retailers continue to grow as new cannabis shop Ancaster Joint has opened its doors.

The family-run pot shop opened on Saturday morning at Duff’s Corners on Wilson St. W. However, it won’t be the only cannabis retailer in the area for long, with Tokyo Smoke scheduled to open sometime next week.

Ancaster Joint is the third provincially-licensed pot shop to open in Hamilton since the rollout of legal cannabis outlets last year. Hello Cannabis and Canna Cabana have been open since last April.

The new Ancaster retailer is the first of a new wave of legal cannabis shops from the most recent Ontario cannabis license lottery back in August.

If all Hamilton locations listed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission is Ontario as seeking authorization are successful, then Hamilton will have seven legal pot shops within the next few months.

The Hamilton shops will be competing with up to five stores located in Burlington, with three already open for business.

Before the nationwide legalization of cannabis, Hamilton had the moniker of the “cannabis capital” of Ontario, with about 80 black market shops operating throughout the city.
