BREAKING: Canada has banned 1500 types of military-grade firearms, effective immediately

Roughly 1,500 different models of military-grade firearms have just been banned in Canada, effective immediately.

The announcement, made today by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, means that licensed firearm owners are officially and legally no longer allowed to carry, use, sell, transport, or import these types of weapons in Canada.

The ban comes shortly after the senseless tragedy of the mass shooting in Nova Scotia – the largest in Canada to date – that killed 22 people. According to the RCMP, some of the firearms used by the shooter were, in fact, military-grade assault weapons.

However, Trudeau has said this was a ban he was prepared to enact months ago, prior to the events in Nova Scotia, but was delayed due to the enormous nationwide disruption resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A two-year amnesty period is in effect with the new ban, allowing time for those who own these sorts of firearms to properly comply with these new laws.

A complete list of the firearms that fall under this new ban has been published via the Canadian Gazette, but the general definition of an ‘assault-style weapon’ is a semi-automatic firearm that is built to be fired rapidly and in large quantities of ammunition.
