Canada Post workers will resume operations on Tuesday morning after a ruling from the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB).
This ordered return to work does not represent a resolution in the strike. Canada Post and its 55,000+ postal workers represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have reportedly reached an impasse in their negotiations.
After 32 consecutive days of strike action by the postal workers, the return to work will commence at 8 am local time on Tuesday, December 17th.
The Canada Post strike officially began on November 15th, suspending Canada Post mail service entirely in the weeks leading up to the rush of the holiday season.

CUPW members entered the strike based on unresolved issues with Canada Post including wage increases in line with inflation, desired improvements to group benefit plans, improved protections against harassment and technological changes, additional paid medical days, paid meal and rest periods for those working 5 hours or more, no contracting out, and precautionary cessation of work for pregnant and breastfeeding employees.
In spite of the labour board ordering a return to work, CUPW members have expressed their intent to continue pushing for improved working conditions.
“We are going to continue to fight hard to get good negotiated collective agreements for our 55,000 members,” wrote CUPW President Jan Simpson in a release.
“We will continue to fight for fair wages, safe working conditions and to retire with dignity. We have been pushing Canada Post for years to expand services to generate more revenue.”
