Canada temporarily removing GST and HST on select goods over holidays

Canada is temporarily giving residents a break on GST and HST when they purchase certain products over the holiday season.

The Liberal federal government announced on Thursday afternoon that they have introduced legislation in Parliament that will provide a two-month GST and HST break for Canadians purchasing groceries and other holiday essentials.

From December 14th, 2024 to February 15th, 2025, Canadians will not have to pay sales tax on food and beverage purchases including groceries, alcohol, catered food, snacks, confectionary, and restaurant meals.

Other purchases that will be tax-free in this period include select children’s toys; video game consoles; printed books; Christmas trees; print newspapers; and children’s clothing, footwear, diapers, and car seats.

Businesses will be expected to remove the GST and/or HST on all qualifying goods at checkout beginning on December 14; a move that is expected to provide an estimated $1.6 billion in federal tax relief through the two-month period.

“Our government can’t set prices, but we can give Canadians, and especially working Canadians, more money back in their pocket,” says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“With a tax break for all Canadians and the Working Canadians Rebate, we’re making sure you can buy the things you need and save for the things you want.”
