Canada’s GST and HST holiday officially ended this past weekend.
Since December 14th, the federal government enacted a sales tax break on select goods and services to help Canadians save an extra bit of money on their holiday season shopping and beyond.
This meant that Canadian shoppers didn’t have to pay GST or HST on items including food & beverage services, groceries, children’s clothing, diapers, children’s car seats, select toys, video game consoles, physical books, printed newspapers, Christmas trees, and more.
However, the move was only temporary, and the GST/HST holiday – which was applied automatically to qualifying goods for shoppers – officially ended on Saturday, February 15th.
Sales tax charges resumed on those qualifying goods and services across Canada as of 12:01 am on February 16th.
