City of Hamilton urges locals not to get together for Easter weekend

The usually-celebratory Easter long weekend feels uncannily like any other average weekend this year, as the spread of COVID-19 has brought all plans, gatherings, and unnecessary human contact to a screeching halt for the foreseeable future.

In the interest of maintaining proper social distancing and slowing the spread of the novel coronavirus, the City of Hamilton is urging residents to stay away from gatherings – even smaller ones with family and friends outside your home – and celebrate the holiday weekend remotely this year.

“Please celebrate Easter, Passover, and other faith-based holidays virtually to help prevent additional cases of COVID-19,” said the City of Hamilton on social media.

Sure, the situation is not ideal. Virtual meet-ups with your extended family for the holiday weekend aren’t exactly the same as the real thing.

But gatherings of more than 5 people at a time (with existing households of 5 or more people exempt) aren’t just discouraged right now; they’re also currently illegal, and Hamiltonians found violating social distancing orders could be subject to a fine of at least $500.

So, while social distancing rules put a damper on the holiday long weekend, it’s hard to disagree that the best, safest thing to do is to continue staying home and not risk a fine, your health, or the health of others. After all, the more we collectively obey the rules, the sooner we might be able to get back to a semblance of a normal life.
