Demonstrators who have been gathering at Freedom Camp outside Hamilton City Hall have decided to move on after two weeks of calling for the Hamilton police to be defunded in order to build free housing.
The group made the announcement to vacate City Hall and start an encampment support network on Monday. The network will provide support for people experiencing homelessness, they will act as observers when encampments are taken down, and follow up with people who have been affected.

However, the HPS Defund group didn’t walk away without leaving one last message for city officials. They wallpapered the front doors of City Hall in purple, pink, yellow, and green “eviction notices” stating their demands.
They also set up a tent in the middle of Main Street West that blocked traffic with a sign that said “FREE HOUSING NOW.”

Organizer Rowa Mohamed told CBC Hamilton that they will still be working for policy change at all levels of government just that the approach is going to be changing.
Demonstrations have been taking place almost constantly outside of City Hall since November 23rd when they set up tents and refused to leave until their demands were met.
