Eastdale Elementary School is reopen with massive upgrades in Stoney Creek

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board starts the new decade with expansion as the new Eastdale Elementary School opened its doors on January 6th with the first bell ringing at 9:15 am.

Eastdale is the first new public elementary school to open in the area for 50 years after it reopened with a bunch of upgrades and expansion.

Although the location and name remain the same, the rejuvenated school has an increased student population, from 219 to 564. It also boasts a modern design, with large windows as a focal point of the new building and a bigger, double court gym with a stage connected to a music room.

The opening of the new school is part of an accommodation plan that is also rebuilding Memorial Elementary and expanding Collegiate Avenue Elementary. As a result of the development plan Green Acres, R.L. Hyslop and Mountain View are set to close.

The Ministry of Education provided $11.75 million for the construction of Eastdale, but the school board required permission to use an additional $1.4 million of its own money from the sale of school properties to finish the project.

Interested parents have been asked not to wander the halls after dropping their children off this week. A formal, official open house will be scheduled in the next few weeks for the community to explore the new Eastdale building.

Some work on the school will continue into the evenings and weekends as there are some finishing touches required in the learning commons, library, and other small cosmetic touches.

The school yard is scheduled to be completed in the spring after the weather improves, so that sod and grass can be planted.
