Etsy: Made In Canada

A New Event by Makeology on September 24

After a hugely successful inaugural spring fair, Makeology is back, hosting the first Etsy: Made in Canada market in Hamilton this September. Etsy: Made in Canada is a national initiative that celebrates artisans in local communities across the country. This year, 35 cities will be participating in this one-day event where Etsy artisans will be selling their handmade goods and vintage treasures. Over 2,000 vendors are expected to participate across Canada this year, with the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology as hosting venue here. Hamilton has a rich, welcoming community with an abundance of talent, so it is not surprising that local Hamilton businesses such as Durand Coffee, White Elephant, and Revolution Kids have recognized the importance of supporting small business owners through sponsoring this event. It is a great opportunity to encourage tourism and build new customer relationships while supporting local artisans.

Makeology has partnered with 541 Eatery, an establishment offering fresh, homemade meals and drinks in the heart of Hamilton. 50% of all admission fees will be donated to their button exchange, which aids those who may not be able to afford a meal or a warm beverage. 541 also offers educational initiatives to youth in the community.

The hope of event organizers is that people will walk away with an appreciation for excellent craftsmanship and how much time and effort each of these artists put into their craft. A lot of energy was spent on selecting artisans who are producing high-quality work in a wide variety of mediums and who also price their work appropriately. Quality, creativity, and, above all, craftsmanship are just some of the qualities Makeology looks for to dissipate the notion that handmade should be cheaper than mass-produced retail. What’s so special about buying handmade? By buying handmade you are not only supporting local business but also a craft. It is so important to ensure that traditional making skills are kept alive. Many artisans have learned their skills through generations and are happy to pass these skills on, as long as there is demand for them. Buying handmade means you are buying something of quality; something unique that you just can’t find everywhere.

Etsy: Made in Canada is great opportunity to highlight local vendors. Here are just a few:
The Wild Kids Apparel is a modern children clothing line by Adriane Duckworth.
Sweet and Simple Co., a small company dedicated to making confections, uses many locally sourced and natural ingredients.
The Haberdashery sells vintage pre-loved pieces and offers Hamilton residents savings on shipping fees.
Wolf Dottir offers upcycled pieces that will make you chuckle.
Lisa Pijuan-Nomura, who’s behind Girl Can Create, is a multidisciplinary artist and creativity coach who creates one-of-a-kind, vintage-inspired, mixed-media pieces.

These are just a few of the Makeologists who call Hamilton their home. Makeology is more than just a craft fair, it’s a community where people can feel welcomed and inspired.
