Forge FC’s goalscoring superstar was sold to a European club

Forge FC has sold Tristan Borges to Belgian club Oud-Heverlee Leuven for a fee of around $300,000 that could even exceed $500,000 if certain conditions are met.

The star midfielder was the leading goalscorer in the Canadian Premier League’s inaugural season and was also selected as the league’s MVP

It was Borges’ penalty kick in the first leg of the CPL final that helped Forge win the title back in October.

Borges’ new club is a second tier Belgian side owned by King Power International Group, which also happens to own Premier League club Leicester City. The club is based in Leuven and was created in 2002 after the merger of FC Zwarte Duivels Oud-Heverlee, Daring Club Leuven and Stade Leuven.

Oud-Heverlee Leuven has spent four seasons in the Belgian top flight with their most recent appearance being in the 2015-16 season.

The 21-year-old Toronto native made 27 appearances for Forge during the 2019 season. Borges finished the season with the CPL’s Golden Boot after scoring 13 goals. He was also tied for most assists in the league with five. Borges was also named the league’s player of the year and U-21 player of the year.

“Yes it hurts losing a very good players,” said Forge GM Costa Smyrniotis. “But I am more confident than with the people we have at Forge and the group there and the support of our owner that this is just going to be a recurring thing.”

Borges has represented Canada at the under-17 and under-20 level before his first senior international call up against Barbados earlier this month.

He played for Dutch side SC Heerenveen’s under-21 side from 2016-18 before returning to Canada to play for Forge in the CPL’s inaugural season.
