Hamilton’s former Ontario Hockey League (OHL) team will not be returning to the city after all.
The Brantford Bulldogs – formerly the Hamilton Bulldogs – relocated to the Brantford Civic Centre for the 2023/2024 hockey season while Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre broke ground on a major renovation project.
The move was originally treated as a temporary one, but a recent announcement has confirmed that the Bulldogs will not, in fact, return to Hamilton once the brand-new FirstOntario Centre opens its doors.
A release from the OHL explains that, following a meeting of the organization’s Board of Governors, there will be an approved transfer of ownership of the Brantford Bulldogs to a group led by NHL hockey player Zach Hyman and family.
“Thank you to the Ontario Hockey League for giving me this opportunity to give back to the game I love,” said Hyman in a release. “It is a privilege to work with such an incredible group of people and I can’t wait to get started. Go Dogs!”
The release also explains that the Bulldogs continue to generate a large following at the Brantford Civic Centre and are pursuing a long-term lease agreement with the City of Brantford.
