Hamilton arts venue The Staircase Theatre saved by new management

Artists and arts advocates woke up to some happy news this morning: Hamilton’s enduring arts venue and heritage space, The Staircase Theatre, has been purchased by a trio of local business people who intend to continue preserving the building as a community-focused arts incubator.
This is an exciting turn of events a few months after The Staircase’s current owners, who have maintained it as an iconic independent arts venue and community space since 1997, announced their plans to sell the building, leaving countless local artists heartbroken and the venue’s future up in the air.

It was a decision in the works for a while beforehand, pushed further by the impacts on the COVID-19 pandemic on live performance.
But luckily, The Staircase’s new buyers, a trio of local businesspeople who have yet to be revealed, care just as much about the venue’s impact on local arts & culture and will be moving forward with The Staircase as the independent performing arts venue locals know and love.
“These 3 people are all business owners in Hamilton that were passionate about what The Staircase did for the community,” said The Staircase’s outgoing owners in an announcement. “They embody the creativity, passion, inclusivity, and love that made The Staircase a place for people to be creative, passionate, and fall in love.”
The new management plans to use The Staircase’s well-equipped café and restaurant space first and foremost to weather the storm of the pandemic and, when it is once again safe for live performances go to ahead, will reopen the intimate black box theatre.
Artists and patrons alike flooded the comments on The Staircase’s announcement on Instagram, rejoicing for the preservation of this important Hamilton arts institution; one that will now remain as a hub for independent arts for years to come.
