Hamilton becomes sixth Canadian city to get ‘bird-friendly’ designation

Hamilton has just become one of six Canadian cities to earn a ‘bird-friendly’ designation from Nature Canada.

The organization created its Bird-Friendly City certification program in response to the concerning decrease in North American bird population at a rate of 25 per cent in the last 50 years alone, much of which is the cause of human activity.

Thanks to the tireless efforts the team at Bird Friendly Hamilton Burlington in collaboration with the City of Hamilton and Nature Canada, Hamilton has now joined the small – but hopefully growing – list of Canadian cities who have worked to make their communities bird-friendly.

According to a release, Hamilton has implemented bird-friendly policies and actions towards this goal including a “no-roam” bylaw for cats to cut back on cat predation against wild bird populations; protection of natural lands use of nature-based climate solutions like tree planting; and engaging residents in relevant community science initiatives.

“Hamilton becoming certified as a Bird Friendly City certified by Nature Canada is truly great,” said Ward 3 councillor Nrinder Nann in a release.

“Our local birds and those that migrate here are part of our eco-diversity that also brings much delight and pride to our residents. This initiative enables us to be responsible and responsive to continuing to foster an environment in our city that cares for all species.”
