Hamilton celebrates public art project with a free launch party tonight

If you’ve been admiring the diverse and vibrant original artworks that currently decorate the usually-unassuming utility boxes all through Hamilton’s downtown, tonight is your chance to celebrate those works as well as the local artists behind them.

Tonight at Mills Hardware at 7 pm, the Downtown Utility Box Public Art Project has its official launch party, celebrating the release of those 37 totally unique utility box wraps that brighten up Hamilton’s downtown core and loudly, proudly announce our city as an eclectic and healthy arts hub.

The City of Hamilton put out a call for submissions for the initiative a few months ago, inviting local visual artists to put their work in the running. From those submissions, 37 artists were culled and commissioned to create a standalone work for temporary showcase on utility boxes peppered throughout the city.

Tonight at the free launch event, curious Hamilton arts lovers will have the chance to mingle with light refreshments and a cash bar at hand, and to learn more about these public artworks and the artists responsible for them.

There will also be an official introduction of the Utility Box Wraps Public Art Map, a handy mobile-friendly map that denotes the location of each awesome, art-attacked utility box in the city.

If you want to learn more about this beautiful public art initiative from behind the scenes, and celebrate the local artists who made it possible, you’ll definitely want to be at the launch event tonight!

The Utility Box Wraps Public Art Celebration takes place tonight at 7 pm at Mills Hardware (95 King Street East). The event is free and open to the public, but registration in advance is required and can be done here.
