Hamilton Conservation Authority is reopening the rail trails this weekend

Nature lovers feeling a little stir-crazy while cooped up at home will have something to look forward to this weekend, as the Hamilton Conservation Authority has announced it will be reopening the Hamilton area’s rail trails for public access.

Beginning on Saturday May 9th, eager locals will be able to take leisurely walks on the rail trails once again including the Hamilton to Brantford Rail Trail, the Dofasco 2000 Trail, the Lafarge 2000 Trail, the Chippewa Trail, and the Canal Park Trails.

“We have received a tremendous number of requests from residents to return to our trails,” said Hamilton Conservation Authority chairman Lloyd Ferguson. “We understand how important it is to get outside and we are at a point in this pandemic where we feel we can safely begin to reopen some trails.”

This phase of reopening, however, does come with conditions. The announcement from the Hamilton Conservation Authority indicates that those who use the trails are still required to follow proper social distancing guidelines by remaining at least 2 metres apart from others, not gathering with groups of friends or others outside of your home, and keeping all pets leashed.

All other amenities also remain closed, with vehicle access to Hamilton’s conservation areas still not permitted for the time being.

The next phase of reopening – which is planned to happen in the coming weeks – will involve reopening those conservation areas for passive hiking and biking provided it is safe to do so.
