Hamilton hospitals will continue with mask mandates

In spite of the Ontario government’s announcement that provincial mask mandates will be lifted in remaining settings where they’re required – such as hospitals and public transit – Hamilton’s hospital networks will be keeping their mask mandates in place.

Both Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton issued separate public notices that masks will be required at their facilities for all staff, patients, and visitors until further notice.

“With safety of our patients and staff in mind, we’re maintaining our masking policy – everyone who enters our buildings must wear a mask,” wrote Hamilton Health Sciences on Twitter.

“We’ll provide an update if we change our policy, which will be made on the advice of internal and provincial infection control experts.”

The province’s decision to lift mask mandates in healthcare settings and public transit has drawn plenty of backlash, as the pandemic continues on and masks remain one of the simplest, most effective means of slowing the spread of COVID-19.

As the pandemic continues to be a threat worldwide and science learns more about the myriad risks of COVID-19 infection, individuals are strongly encouraged to continue using measures like masking indoors in public, good ventilation, and staying home if they feel unwell.
