Hamilton introduces new bicycle counter to support cycling infrastructure

Passersby on Hunter Street in Hamilton may have noticed a tall green board standing along the street’s bike lane.

That board serves a very specific purpose: it’s a live bicycle counter with a display board that tracks all the bikes that pass it in real time, showing off the total number for the day and the combined number for the whole year.

Through its Smart Commute program, the City of Hamilton has erected this first bicycle counter with plans to add more by bike lanes throughout the city in the near future.

The intent of the bicycle counter is to share data that normalizes and encourages bike riding as a means of transportation in Hamilton.

The counter will also help inform better cycling infrastructure in Hamilton going forward with the aim of creating a bike lane network that’s safer and more connected.
