Hamilton investigates confirmed case of measles

Hamilton public health is currently investigating potential exposures related to a confirmed case of measles in a local child.
Known identified contacts who may have been exposed to this this travel-related measles case have been contacted, and those who may have been exposure to the measles virus should watch for symptoms including high fever of 101 F or greater, red and blotchy rashes, cough, runny nose, and red & watery eyes for 21 days after exposure.
Public health is also warning Hamilton residents about potential exposures at Hamilton Medical Centre and Walk-In Clinic on March 5th from 9:15 am to 12 pm; Costco Stoney Creek on March 5th from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm; Stoney Creek Medical Walk-In Clinic on March 6th from 6:40 pm to 9 pm; and McMaster Children’s Hospital Emergency Department on March 6th from 7:53 pm to 8:53 pm.

“Measles is a highly contagious infection of the lungs that spreads easily to those who are not fully vaccinated against measles or who have not previously had measles,” reads a message from the City.
“Infants under one year of age, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems are at an increased risk of complications.”
Those who develop potential symptoms of measles are urged to contact their healthcare provider and stay home, not attending work, school, childcare, or any other public spaces.
All Hamilton residents are also encouraged to ensure they are up-to-date on measles vaccinations.
“Measles is a serious, vaccine preventable infection that can cause severe life-long complications,” said Dr. Brendan Lew, Hamilton’s Associate Medical Officer of Health.
“Vaccination against measles is highly effective and we can combat the spread of measles through vaccination, education, and vigilant public health measures. It is strongly recommended you and your family are up-to-date with appropriate measles vaccination and that you report your child’s vaccines to Public Health.”
