Hamilton is reducing speed limits for residential streets and school zones

Hamilton motorists will have to be a little more mindful of their driving speeds in certain parts of the city going forward.

Over the next three years, the City of Hamilton is rolling out a plan to reduce the speed limits in various neighbourhoods around the city, particularly those with residential communities and schools.

The city is enacting these plans as part of Vision Zero, a worldwide initiative that endeavours to reduce, and eventually eliminate, serious injuries and fatalities due to vehicle accidents. As one might expect, studies show that risks of pedestrian harm are directly correlated with the intensity of driving speeds, and that reducing these speeds significantly reduces those risks.

With that in mind, the City of Hamilton will be reducing speed limits on residential streets to 40 km/hr, and to 30 km/hr in school zones. Naturally, those speed limits mean nothing unless motorists strictly abide by them, so take note and drive safely, Hamilton!
