In an effort to help reduce traffic accidents, injuries, and fatalities, the City of Hamilton has launched a campaign to educate local drivers on distracted driving.
It’s another piece of the city’s Vision Zero initiative, which puts focus on developing safe speeds, roads, drivers, and vehicles with the ultimate goal of achieving zero fatalities or serious injuries on the road.
Distracted driving is more than just using your cell – it can include any activity that distracts the driver from safely operating their vehicle. Stay alert. https://t.co/2HoAufbgem pic.twitter.com/JpRfbpmCMN

The initiative is certainly important; in fact, in Ontario, one person is injured in an accident related to distracted driving every 30 minutes, and fatalities caused by distracted driving have more than doubled since 2000, becoming the leading cause of death on Ontario roads.
“Distracted driving is more than just using cell phones for calls or texting,” reads a release from the city. “It can include any activity that impairs a driver from safely operating their vehicle.”
The city is also sharing tips to avoid distracted driving, including only using your cell phone when parked; turning your cell phone off or leaving it out of reach to reduce the urge to use it while driving; pre-setting GPS and radio before departing; and avoiding other distractions such as eating, grooming, reading, or tending to children or pets.
