A new temporary outdoor shelter has been launched in Hamilton to support the city’s unhoused residents.
In partnership with charitable organization Good Shepherd, the City of Hamilton has officially opened the doors of the new shelter on the Barton Tiffany Lands, which consists of 40 heated and cooled double cabins that can support up to 80 people.
When fully operational, the shelter’s other supports include trailers for washrooms, showers, and laundry; common buildings for residents and staff; and 24/7 on-site support including security and Good Shepherd staff.

Services available at the shelters will include case management, health and mental health care, addiction support, assistance with transitioning to permanent housing, and access to meals and snacks.
The City’s outreach team is currently prioritizing individuals who currently reside in encampments for referrals.
“I remain focused on taking the necessary, urgent steps required as we address the affordable housing and homelessness crisis in our community,” said Hamilton’s Mayor Andrea Horwath in a release.
“The opening of the temporary outdoor shelter site, and its wraparound supports are a crucial part of the City of Hamilton’s strategy to temporarily expand shelter beds, while providing dignity, safety, and mental health support for vulnerable individuals.”
