More than four years after opening, Hamilton’s MaiPai Tiki Bar continues to draw major crowds for their standout Detroit-style pizza; a dish for which they just won some big awards at Canada’s biggest pizza competition.
MaiPai’s Salar Madadi made two Detroit pies at the 2024 Pizza Fest Challenge in Montreal last week, entering a competition with over 50 pizza makers from across Canada.
Characterized by their rectangular shape, fluffy crust, and crispy, cheesy edges, Detroit-style pizzas offer a blank canvas for any number of wildly creative toppings. MaiPai has served its share of pepperoni pies, but they’re no stranger to using ingredients like blueberries, corn, Big Mac-style sauce, or kashke bademjan.
The two competing pies – a Detroit-style Margherita and a more unique-looking creation complete with edible flowers – earnest first place in the Detroit Style/Pan and Special Creation/Non-Traditional categories, respectively.
Madadi’s pizzas are no stranger to awards: his creations have also earned top prizes at the Canadian Pizza Summit and the Restaurants Canada Pizza Competition.
Congratulations to these Hamilton favourites on their wins!
