The City of Hamilton will be receiving over $10 million through the federal government’s rapid housing initiative, which hopes to support up to 3,000 new and permanent affordable housing units across Canada.
Money from the government has already been allocated to build 45 new affordable homes for 53 people on the city’s housing waitlist at different locations across Hamilton.

Each of the four projects are expected to be completed by the end of the year and look to support women at risk of homelessness, Indigenous women, and seniors.
Locations for the new housing include a modular building on George Street as well as the conversion of office and commercial spaces on King Street East, Ottawa Street North, and Ferguson Avenue.
City Council recently recommended the four projects to Adam Vaughan, the parliamentary secretary to the minister of families, children, and social development.
Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger said that they were able to work quickly with the federal government after they started accepting applications through the rapid housing initiative.
