Hamilton reopens today and here’s what that means

In case the social media fanfare from local restaurants hasn’t already tipped you off, Hamilton is reopening today after weeks of province-wide COVID-19 restrictions.

The Ontario government originally enacted these restrictions at the beginning of January in the face of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, which spread like wildfire across the province and put immense pressures on our health care systems.

Those restrictions included reduced capacity limits in a number of public spaces, limits on private gatherings, and the temporary closure of restaurants, bars, movie theatres, live performance venues, and gyms for indoor activities.

Now, citing positive trends and a decline in COVID-19 cases, the province is relaxing many of those restrictions, with shuttered venues able to reopen for indoor patronage once again; albeit, with some limitations.

Venues like restaurants, bars, cinemas, concert halls, fitness studios, and more are now permitted to reopen at a maximum 50 per cent capacity. Other venues, such as retail stores, grocery stores, malls, museums, galleries, historic sites, and more are also limited to 50 per cent capacity for now.

Existing COVID-19 safety measures, like mandatory mask-wearing and proof of vaccination requirements in applicable settings, are also still in place.

Ontarians are also encouraged to go get their booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccines, which provides some protection against infection and is excellent at preventing severe disease, hospitalization, and death.
