A prominent Hamilton restaurant, bar, and brewery has announced that it is permanently closing its doors.
The George Hamilton, located in a 160+ year-old building at the corner of King Street and Bay Street, has long been a local favourite for pub fare like burgers, sandwiches, salads, shareable appetizers, pastas, house-made craft beer, and more.
Now, the restaurant’s current owners Michael Peters and Dean Pearson have shared a lengthy post to social media announcing this local spot’s closure due to economic challenges.
“It now costs $1.1 million a year to run the restaurant versus $800k before COVID. There have been no extra sales to cover this,” reads the post on The George Hamilton’s Facebook page, adding additional stresses like the current closure of FirstOntario Centre across the street as contributing factors.
Peters and Pearson also explain that a change in their landlord situation has meant they owe rent arrears immediately, which they explain is “impossible. There is no business until the arena reopens.”
The George Hamilton’s closure is effective immediately. See more here.
