Following the revelation that sewage has been leaking into the harbour for 26 years, the City of Hamilton has unveiled the estimated amount of sewage spill and it’s, well, a lot.
A release from the city reveals that as much as 337 million litres of sanitary sewage leaked into Hamilton Harbour since 1996, thanks to a hole in a combined sewer pipe in the area of Burlington Street and Wentworth Street North.
The estimate by city staff was determined based on water meter usage data for all properties connected to the combined sewer pipe.
Following the discovery and immediate repair of a hole in a combined sewer pipe on Burlington St, the City estimates that as much as 337 million litres of sanitary sewage discharged into the Hamilton Harbour over a duration of 26 years.

The city has also repaired and realigned the sewer, with work completed on Wednesday, November 23rd and all sewage now flowing into the Western Sanitary Interceptor.
The approximate cost of repairs, excluding staff time, was $29,830, which includes excavation and repair of the sewer, onsite vacuuming of combined sewer wastewater, and permanent restoration of the road.
