The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is currently seeking suggestions from the public as they look to rename the city’s Ryerson Elementary School.
In light of the recent discoveries of Indigenous children’s remains on the sites of former residential schools in Canada, the board voted unanimously in June 2021 to rename the school which is currently named in honour of Egerton Ryerson, a key architect of Canada’s atrocious residential school system.
As @CBCHamilton reports, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (@HWDSB) is soliciting community opinion for a new name for Ryerson Elementary School. This is after the board voted to undertake an Indigenous-led re-naming process in June. https://t.co/MKfcLYe9eQ

Another notable school named for this figure – Toronto’s Ryerson University – is similarly going through a renaming process.
The HWDSB has been undergoing an Indigenous-informed process that “embraces ethical engagement, consultation with local Indigenous communities, and the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation,” according to a release from the board.
“So far, we have engaged Indigenous knowledge keepers to understand how the land has shaped human and natural activity on the school site, and to suggest potential names.”
Now, the board is asking the community to submit potential name ideas for the school until March 21st. Individuals who would like to suggest a name are invited to carefully read the Guiding Principles of the Renaming Process on the HWDSB website before offering their suggestion.
From there, a potential name offering can be made either by emailing the suggestion to ryerson@hwdsb.on.ca, or by completing the online naming survey here.
