Hamilton’s public and Catholic school boards are joining others across the province as Ontario’s new ban on cellphones during class time and vaping on school grounds takes effect.
An effort to reduce distractions in the classroom and improve health for students, these province-wide measures officially take effect in schools on September 1st.
Students from kindergarten to Grade 6 are required to keep their phones put away and on silent during the school day unless permitted by an educator. Students in Grade 7 up to Grade 12 will not be permitted during class time unless an educator explicitly allows it.

In addition, social media websites will be removed from school internet networks and devices, and there will be comments on distraction levels included on students’ report cards.
As part of the ban on vaping, students found to be carrying vape devices or cigarettes on school property will be required to surrender them, with parents then notified. The provincial government will spend $30 million to install vape detectors and other security upgrades.
