For the past decade, The Mule has held a spot as one of Hamilton’s most popular restaurants, known for their playful menu of tacos, tequila, and other chef-inspired fare. In fact, that popularity was present before they even opened.
In 2014, food industry mainstays Erin Dunham and Matt Kershaw of hospitality group The Other Bird managed the unlikely: they crowdfunded The Mule through a campaign on Indiegogo, rallying the Hamilton community and meeting their lofty goal of $100,000 to kickstart the restaurant without needing even a penny on loan from the bank.
The impressive success led to the pair opening The Mule as Hamilton’s first crowdfunded restaurant at 41 King William Street in 2015, where it has remained a fixture of the local food and nightlife scene by balancing an unpretentious vibe and hip aesthetic with quality food & drink.
Showing no signs of slowing in recent years, The Mule has expanded with the opening of its equally delicious sister restaurant Burro in Burlington, plus further bustling locations of The Mule launching in Cambridge, London, and a seasonal one in Port Dover.
To build a successful restaurant venture out of a humble crowdfunding campaign is no small feat; and with 2025 marking the 10th anniversary of The Mule, this beloved taco joint is celebrating with a fun initiative they called ‘Reverse Crowdfunding’ to give back to the Hamilton foodie community that’s supported them from the beginning and beyond.
The campaign is simple: anyone who dines in at any of The Mule’s restaurants in Ontario between now and mid-January (while supplies last) will receive a generous ‘reverse crowdfund’ in the form of a ‘Taco Tender’ card worth $20 that can be used on dine-in food at all locations in January and February.
If there’s anything better than tacos, it’s pre-funded tacos. So whether you gravitate towards classics like the Al Pastor and Blackened Fish or something twistier like the Cali Fried Chicken and Habanero Brisket, now is a great time to head down to The Mule as they celebrate a decade in the most delicious way possible.
