Hamilton to offer improved parking pay options

Improvements to the city of Hamilton continue to arise on a day-to-day basis, however this one comes in a more subtle manner.

Parking, an inevitable issue that every downtown Hamilton driver has had to battle with at one point or another, is finally getting some attention from the city.

This improvement comes in the form of the addition of credit card payments or payment through your phone.

Although this project is not quite as convenient as the free parking that was once offered in 2018, the noticeable improvements will be a relief to all who wish to park downtown.

The city will be installing 32 new pay and display machines in 14 different lots this fall, as well as putting them along Locke Street in conjunction with the road construction.

These 32 new machines will be added in addition to the 34 that have already been installed in 22 different lots throughout the city.

The remaining 21 lots are expected to be completed by the Spring of 2020.

The introduction of mobile payment options is expected to occur in early 2020, followed by the introduction of ‘tap’ based payment later in 2020.

These new machines will be a major quality of life improvement for the driver. In a world where even credit cards are beginning to become obsolete in favour of cell phones, spare change for parking meters is becoming increasingly less common.

The introduction of these parking machines is well overdue, with talks of implementing these machines starting in 2016. Nevertheless, they will be greatly appreciated by the public.

The cost of replacing all the parking meters in Hamilton is estimated to cost around $878,000. The result, however, could mean an increase in public parking, which means longer stays in the downtown core, giving more attention to local businesses’ and overall improving city efficiency.

Parking costs in downtown Hamilton will remain $1.50 an hour on weekdays before 6 pm, and free on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays.
