Hamilton urges locals to get their flu shot

Amid an imposing ‘triple threat’ of respiratory viruses circulating – influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 – the City of Hamilton is urging residents to protect themselves and the community as optimally as possible during this peak of transmission.

With hospital capacities strained – particularly at McMaster Children’s Hospital – Hamilton Public Health has made it even easier for residents to access their free annual flu shot.

Walk-in flu shots will now be made available at Hamilton Pubic Health’s Mountain Vaccine Clinic within Lime Ridge Mall at 999 Upper Wentworth Street on the mall’s second floor.

All residents ages 6 months and up can get their flu shot at this clinic up to December 21st, 2022 when the clinic closes.

Walk-in flu shots will also be made available at the city’s mobile vaccine clinic sites beginning the week of December 12th, 2022, and the city encourages co-administration of both a COVID-19 vaccine booster and flu shot, though not required.

With respiratory illnesses continuing to circulate locally, Hamilton Public Health Services is making it easier for families to get their flu shots this holiday season by offering walk-ins at LimeRidge Mall.

Flu shots are also widely available at a number of pharmacies, clinics, and primary care facilities around Hamilton. Locals can visit the city website for a list of locations where they can find their flu shot.

Other recommended measures to help prevent the spread of viruses like influenza, COVID-19, and RSV include wearing a well-fitting mask like an N95 in public spaces, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home if you feel unwell, washing hands regularly and thoroughly, and not touching your face.

“The flu shot is the best protection against this year’s Influenza strain, especially for children under five, individuals who are pregnant and those 65 years and older who are at higher risk of hospitalization and flu-related complications, such as pneumonia, heart attack or death,” reads a release from the city.

“These severe outcomes are already placing an extra burden on Hamilton’s significantly strained hospitals and healthcare capacity.“
