Hamilton residents have one of the longest average work commutes in all of Canada.
According to 2024 data released by Statistics Canada, the Hammer is high on the list for Canadian cities with commuting times of the longest duration, averaging 30.6 minutes.
With commutes returning to pre-pandemic levels, this puts Hamilton in fourth place nationally as of May 2024, falling just behind Toronto at 33.3 minutes, Oshawa at 32.6 minutes, and Barrie at 30.7 minutes.
In addition, Hamilton has one of the highest shares of workers with commutes over an hour long in the country, with 13.8% of commuting workers in the city more likely to have a commute of 60 minutes or more.

Statistics Canada shared these findings while noting the difficult impacts of commuting on Canadian workers.
“Commuting is a fact of life for many Canadians. However, it has financial costs, and for those with long commutes, it can be associated with negative health outcomes and challenges maintaining work-life balance,” reads a message from Statistics Canada.
“Measuring changes in commuting patterns is also important to plan commuting and transit infrastructure, and to better understand urbanization and changing business practices.”
