Hamilton’s Black Forest Inn reopening as Das Schnitzelhaus

It’s been a whirlwind few months for Hamilton’s classic Black Forest Inn after back-to-back reopenings and closures. Now, the restaurant is being revived until an entirely new identity.

Das Schnitzelhaus is set to open Wednesday, December 4th in the Black Forest Inn’s longtime location at 255 King Street East in the International Village.

In a post to social media promising the same German and Austrian inspired menu, atmosphere, and service locals have come to expect from Black Forest Inn, Das Schnitzelhaus says it will operate under new ownership.

“Rooted in Hamilton’s history, we’re dedicated to preserving the authentic German flavours, warm hospitality, and cherished traditions that made this location a local favourite,” wrote Das Schnitzelhaus in an Instagram post.

“Come visit us and experience the next chapter of this historic landmark. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a first-time guest, we can’t wait to welcome you!”

Black Forest Inn first opened its doors in Hamilton nearly 60 years ago, serving traditional German and Austrian fare including handmade schnitzels and much more.

The restaurant was closed through much of summer 2024 but promised to reopen in September. They later announced that Black Forest Inn would be permanently closing in September before sharing news that they would be reopening in early October

Those plans were quickly dropped as Black Forest Inn shared that they would remain closed after all.

Though it’s not clear why the name has been changed to Das Schnitzelhaus, locals who loved Black Forest Inn will surely be happy to see much of the restaurant’s offerings preserved.

That’s wonderful as long they don’t have the same manager- he didn’t know anything about respect or customer service!!

Most amusing: Schnitzelhaus is the same nickname we have used for The Black Forest Inn for years.

One wonders what might have happened had Denninger’s, across the road, had bought the building from Forge and Foster or whomever got into the weeds with the property and the business, and then renamed it Denninger’s Schnitzelhaus, gave it a refit, a lift, and then really made it new, both for the older generations, and the newer generations coming along, and the let the waltzes and polkas and steins and schnitzels begin again!

Had been going here since 1970. The tradition and great food hopefully not compromised. Cannot wait!

I somehow knew that someone would reopen this Hamilton Icon of German cuisine. When we lived downtown in the ’70s we’d eat there every other day because the prices were so low. We live in Ancaster now and, really, this is the only reason that we would venture into the lower city.

My father built the original restaurant and I helped as a youngster to do the two additions. My mother cooked in the kitchen way back as well. Can’t wait to make a return. Just having difficulty deciding what to order first time back.

Wife and I went for dinner last night. Opening night. We can definitively say that it’s safe to go back in the water. The food was exceptional, I had the schnitzel Hollandia and my wife had her usual Pusta schnitzel. Hayley was on top of her game, service was exceptional, friendly conversation and prompt attention to all our needs. The entire staff were happy and excited to be back. We arrived at 4:40 and there was only one other table occupied but it was starting to get busier by the time we left. Come on folks, let’s support this fine establishment so that we don’t lose it again. We had a good conversation with Paul, the manager – yes, he’s back as well – who thanked us for remaining loyal patrons. We’ll be going back often, particularly on Sundays for our favorite meatball soup.
