Hamilton’s first Art Crawl of the spring kicks off next weekend

If you enjoy art, shopping, trying new foods, and exploring the city, Art Crawl is an event for you!

Hamilton’s monthly Art Crawl is a way for artists in the city to share their art or music, as well as a way to promote local businesses.

Art Crawl is held on James Street North on the second Friday of each month. Some times of year are busier than others, but it generally runs through all seasons.

Art Crawl began in 2005 when artists decided to make a move to better their success. Art gallery owners on James Street thought staying open a little later once a month would help attract more business.

At the time, the city of Hamilton was suffering from the decline of the steel industry. The community worked with the art galleries to create something bigger. While the art galleries stayed open late, vendors lined up on the sidewalks of James Street selling art, music, and good eats, which allowed the event to turn into something successful for all.

The local event continued to be successful for a few years, and by 2009 it was well established. In 2009, both artists and organizers decided to create a larger event called Supercrawl. It has become one of Hamilton’s largest outdoor events while still respecting the original history of Art Crawl, allowing both events to be as successful as they still are today.

Art Crawl 2023 has been going on for a few months now, but the first Art Crawl of the spring starts next weekend on Friday, April 14th at 5pm! Many more business and food vendors attend the event starting in the spring, and it picks up as the weather gets warmer.
