Hamilton’s Tundra Leather launches leatherworking classes

A beloved Hamilton business for custom leather products and more is launching their next series of hands-on workshops so locals can learn a thing or two about leathercraft.

Tundra Leather has been a family-run Hamilton staple since 1991 with a shop located at 313 King Street East in the International Village. It’s a place to buy beautifully hand-made leather goods like wallets, journals, belts, bags, and beyond, and even get custom leatherwork for something one-of-a-kind. The shop is also a place where those who dabble in leatherwork can grab supplies and accessories.

Current owner Kristi Grove Cino, who “grew up among the smells and shelves of Tundra,” took over the shop in 2015 from her father Peter Grove, determined to maintain its legacy as a local institution. Since then, Tundra has offered in-person classes and workshops so people of all experience levels from beginner to advanced can try their hand at making unique, personal leather products.

“My dad passed away in May 2015, and I couldn’t see the store close, so I quit my job and took over at Tundra,” she says. “The classes are taught mostly by Sean (our leatherworker since 1995), and some by me, and Ro (our part time staff) helps.”

Their expertise guides groups through skills like hand-stitching and leather stamping as well as the ins and outs of making items like wallets, belts, purses, pet collars, and more. They’ve even got one-on-one classes with Sean Dalgetty, Tundra’s resident leatherworker, for a personalized learning experience.

Whether you’ve worked with leather before or want to learn a brand-new skill with your friends and family, there’s something for everyone.

“Our philosophy has always been reflective of my Dad’s traditions – creativity, kindness, honesty, and the passing on of tips, tricks, and knowledge,” adds Cino.

“When a trade like leatherwork takes a lifetime to learn, hone, and perfect, our community understands and embraces the value of quality artisan goods made in our own neighbourhoods. Hamilton has always been on the forefront of supporting handmade and loving local, and we wouldn’t want to be anywhere but here.”
