Health Canada approves Pfizer vaccine for 12-15 year olds

Health Canada has officially approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for use in Canadian residents 12 to 15 years of age.

This comes after the vaccine was approved for use in individuals 16 years of age and older, meaning that now, any Canadian aged 12 or over has been approved to receive Pfizer’s vaccine when they are eligible to do so..

A trial conducted in the United States which featured 2,260 adolescents ages 12 to 15 determined that the vaccine is safe and effective, with a 100 per cent efficacy in that age group.

Within the trial, 18 cases of COVID-19 were found in the group given a placebo shot, and zero infections were found in the vaccinated group.

Though younger populations have been observed to be at considerably less risk of developing serious cases of COVID-19, there is still the strong potential for youth to carry the virus and pass it on to others who may be higher risk.

Adding youths 12 and up to the vaccine rollout could play a large role in mitigating the spread and further mutation of COVID-19.

There is no word yet, however, on when Canadians in this age group across the country will actually be able to get their jab.
