Here’s what’s happening in Hamilton this weekend

Spring has finally sprung in Hamilton. The snow has melted, the weather has warmed up, and Hamiltonians are out exploring what the city has to offer.

Both Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 are chalked full of events for the entire family. If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, look no further. Here’s a guide to what’s happening in Hamilton this weekend.

Saturday

Sew Hungry

Feeling hungry? Sew Hungry is an annual restaurant and food truck rally down on Ottawa Street North. From 11 am to 8 pm, explore Hamilton’s vast culinary scene and really wow your taste buds.

The event is both kid and adult friendly — there will be a kids’ zone full of fun activities for the youngsters, and adults can kick back and relax in the beer garden. There will live music going on throughout the day for all to enjoy.

The event is free to enter, but make sure to bring your wallet (especially cash!) to buy all the food you crave.

Veggie Fest

Living a balanced lifestyle and want to learn more about food that is vegetarian friendly? Enter Veggie Fest Hamilton. Veggie Fest is a food festival dedicated to Hamilton’s vegetarian, vegan, and raw food community.

This year’s event includes incredible speakers, a plethora of exhibitors, and all day yoga classes. Between learning from the speakers, eating all the veggie goodness, and taking a free yoga class, Veggie Fest Hamilton is good for your body, mind, and soul.

The event takes place at Ancaster Fairgrounds and will be running from 10 am to 6 pm. Admission and parking are free, but bring some cash to buy yourself tasty treats!

Doors Open Hamilton

Do you love learning about your community? Have you ever walked by beautiful, historic buildings in the city and wondered what they were like inside? Doors Open Hamilton is here to show you Hamilton’s oldest, most unique and ever-changing spaces.

There are 29 different buildings participating this year, all with the purpose of educating the community on Hamilton spaces, landscapes, and how things have evolved over the years. Many of the buildings included in this year’s Doors Open are rarely open to the public.

A full listing of the buildings taking part in Doors Open Hamilton is available on the Doors Open Ontario website. The event is free and runs between 10 am and 4 pm.

Bump, Baby & Toddler Marketplace

The Baby, Bump & Toddler Marketplace returns to Hamilton this weekend. This market place is designed for expecting parents, parents with young children, caregivers of young children, or just about anyone with a child in their life.

This marketplace brings the latest products for parents and children alike. You’ll find things for newborns to toddlers, as well as for expecting parents. Businesses, bloggers, and other parents will be attending the event and will love to speak about the latest tips and tricks.

Tickets are available for $7 in advance, or $10 at the door. The event takes place at the Hamilton Convention Centre, running from 9 am to 3 pm.

Stars on Ice

Canada’s world-class skaters are coming to Hamilton for the Stars on Ice tour. This tour celebrates both Olympic medalists to world champions.

The Stars on Ice roster is phenomenal, presenting famous skaters such as Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir, and Patrick Chan. These skaters are in a league of their own, winning medal after medal, showing the world that Canada is a powerhouse in ice dancing and figure skating.

The show takes place at First Ontario Centre, starting at 7:30 pm. Tickets range from $15 to $29 dollars and are available for purchase through Ticketmaster.

 

Sunday

Bike for Mike

Bike for Mike is a charity bike ride that takes place yearly in honour of Mike Chamberlain. Mike was an avid cyclist, travelling to ride the best bike trails across the world, but his favourite place to ride was Hamilton.

Bike for Mike’s goal is to promote safer streets and bicycle safety in Hamilton, so that everyone can experience the joy of riding a bike. There are six different routes you can ride, ranging from 5km to 75km in length and varying in skill level. Whether you’re a young rider or a seasoned pro, there’s a ride for you.

Registration begins at midnight on May 6, or you can register in person at the event. The earliest ride’s sign in is 8:30 am, and the latest ride’s sign in is 10:15 am. For all the details, visit the Bike for Mike website.

This Ain’t Saltlick Brunch

Saltlick Smokehouse and This Ain’t Hollywood are teaming up again to serve up a fire sale brunch. After two successful brunches in April, it’s only fitting that This Ain’t Saltlick gets to go for a third round.

The brunch is buffet style, including whole smoked hog, smoked brisket, scrambled eggs, mac & cheese, and other delicious options. There’ll be a cash bar if you prefer a boozy brunch.

Brunch takes place between 11 am and 3 pm. Tickets are $25 and are available online through Bruha.

Blades of Steel: Kentucky Derby

The ladies of the Hamilton food industry are throwing it down Sunday night at Blades of Steel Part 3: Kentucky Derby. Watch your favourite female chefs go head to head in a competition that challenges creativity, time management, and skill.

In the food round, Chef Hayley from The French will take on Chef Maria from Cake & Loaf. In the cocktail round, Jill from Two Black Sheep will battle it out against Rosa Vo of Sous Bas.

If you’re into food competition shows, Blades of Steel is the event for you. The event takes place from 6 pm to 1 am at Nique. Tickets are available for $10 through Bruha.


No matter your age or interests, there is something for you to do in Hamilton this weekend. Enjoy one of the first weekends of great weather and really kick start your spring.
