Iconic brand-name store in Jackson Square is closing up

An iconic brand-name clothing store in Hamilton’s Jackson Square – and one of the mall’s longstanding anchor tenants – is closing its doors

Roots Canada, known for apparel like jackets, sweaters, athletic wear, pyjamas, accessories, and much more, has been a prominent piece of Jackson Square for literal decades, while the brand itself has been a Canadian staple for roughly 50 years.

However, passersby in the Downtown Hamilton mall will have noticed large signage in the Roots store’s front façade, informing locals that the store will be closing permanently as of Saturday, February 4th.

As a brand, Roots isn’t going anywhere; in fact, locals can still shop in-store at nearby Roots locations within Lime Ridge Mall and Burlington’s Mapleview Shopping Centre.

It will certainly feel strange not to see Roots in Jackson Square any longer; especially since it has persisted as a central fixture of the mall for so long.

I was in that Roots a couple of times and it seemed as if they were mainly selling kids clothes and very expensive purses. I asked the manager if the demographic had changed and he said it had. It’s too bad they are leaving as I feel bad for any business owner and their staff for having to go out of business.
