Iconic Jackson Square cafe has permanently closed

A decades-old icon of Hamilton’s Jackson Square has permanently closed.

The Oak Café Restaurant – a Jackson Square fixture known for affordable, homestyle breakfast and lunch – has bid farewell after more than 30 years of serving its food to Hamiltonians.

The closure is pretty unceremonious; the lights are off at the familiar takeaway counter, and Google lists the business as permanently closed, even though the Oak Café’s website is still active.

Plenty of Hamiltonians have memories of grabbing a bite from the Oak Café over the past few decades; the restaurant sported diner-style staples like classic bacon & egg breakfasts, chicken salad sandwiches homemade chilli, burgers, fish & chips, poutine, turkey club wraps, and much more.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a menu item that cost more than about $10 too, making the Oak Café a popular spot for locals looking for cheap eats.

We’re sad to see this remnant of Hamilton’s more old-school food scene say goodbye, but the Oak Café Restaurant undoubtedly created lots of memories for locals who frequented the downtown core.
