McMaster and Mohawk will not be lowering tuition despite all classes moving online

After Hamilton’s most prominent post-secondary institutions announced that all programs and courses would be moving online for at least the upcoming fall term, they have also said that tuition fees will not be reduced despite the move to e-learning.

Both McMaster University and Mohawk College have stated that no adjustments will be made to tuition rates for the 2020-2021 academic year despite the arguably drastic pivot of the learning experience; a decision that has left many post-secondary students feeling as if they won’t be getting the most out of their educational experience.

“It isn’t surprising that some students are asking why tuition rates are not being reduced even though learning for the fall is moving online,” reads a statement on McMaster’s website.

“Your education is a significant investment. Our investment in and commitment to delivering the very best teaching and learning to our students is unchanged; in fact, at McMaster we are investing significantly in the online learning experience by bolstering our resources to better serve our students and faculty.”

The statement goes on to explain the ways in which an online education model is, apparently, not really cheaper than in-person classes. McMaster also says they are working to invest considerably in crafting the most optimal e-learning experience possible for its students, while keeping the same number of instructors employed.

That said, while tuition fees won’t budge for McMaster and Mohawk this year, fees now rendered non-applicable – such as fees for the use of some of the school’s facilities – will be adjusted accordingly.
