Justin Trudeau’s federal government has just awarded $1.475 million to the research team at McMaster University investigating COVID-19.
The funding comes from the Canadian Foundation of Innovation’s Exceptional Opportunities Fund, which is providing approximately $28 million to 52 universities, research hospitals, and colleges across Canada.
Thank you @JustinTrudeau, @NavdeepSBains and @InnovationCA for $1.475M for McMaster researchers to continue their work in fighting COVID-19: tracking the virus, addressing its impact on animals and humans, and developing new therapies. | @MacHealthSci https://t.co/mprmHwLC6z

McMaster’s research team is led by Karen Mossman, the university’s Vice President of Research, and includes a total of 5 researchers who are studying and addressing the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and the novel coronavirus.
The research includes investigating the effects of the virus in both humans and animals, as well as analysis of how the virus spreads through communities and work on antiviral therapies and vaccines.
“Science is our greatest asset in our fight against the virus. That’s why our researchers must have access to the necessary resources to do their job,” said Prime Minister Trudeau. “This fund is helping institutions across the country — colleges, universities and so on — so they can better advance science.”
McMaster’s research team says they’re taking an intensive, multidisciplinary approach to their COVID-19 research.
“Our core team – and the experts across disciplines who are working with us – have, historically, approached our research by working together, crossing boundaries to achieve results that cannot be made in isolation,” says Mossman. “It’s why we’ve been and continue to be so successful in making discoveries.”
