McMaster University will lift its mask mandate as of June 1st

Hamilton’s McMaster University has made some adjustments to its on-campus COVID-19 policies, including the lifting of its mask mandate as of June 1st, 2022.

A release from the university notes that they continue to ‘strongly encourage’ the use of masks at all times when indoors on campus, or while outdoors in close proximity to others.

Free surgical masks are still offered in numerous campus locations; though with the hyper-contagiousness of Omicron and its emerging subvariants, quality respirators like KN95s and N95s offer the most robust protection.

McMaster’s lifted mask mandate follows the pause of its vaccine mandate for students, faculty, staff, and visitors as of May 1st, 2022.

“We wish to thank our students, faculty and staff for their ongoing diligence in following health and safety guidelines over the last two years,” said Susan Tighe, provost and vice-president Academic.

“Thanks to your collective effort, and the improving course of the pandemic, we are able to continue our gradual return to a more regular state. We encourage our community to continue to be respectful of one another in our ongoing efforts to keep our campus safe.”

The university notes that, if the pandemic’s circumstances and public health advice shift, mask mandates and vaccine policies could be reinstated.
