Over a two week period, there were 637 speeding charges, 24 stunt driving charges, one impaired driving charge, and 143 other traffic related charges.
Hamilton Police Service says the numbers are unacceptable and just because the streets are empty, doesn’t mean drivers can ignore the rules of the road.
Local drivers caught stunt driving could lose their car for seven days and face a seven-day driving suspension as well as an automatic court date.
Stunt driving in empty city streets during the shutdown became a viral sensation after videos began appearing on social media. A lot of major cities have experienced an uptick in stunt driving and tightened their road safety charges.
