New cycle lanes coming for Claremont Access

Hamilton can expect to see the first two-way bike lanes up the escarpment in 2019. The new lanes will be part of the Claremont Access.

Late last year, Ontario announced that Hamilton would receive $3.7 million for new cycling infrastructure in the city. The announcement came nearly two years after Hamilton cyclist Jay Keddy was struck and killed on the Claremont Access.

The Claremont Access bike lanes will begin construction in 2019, along with an extension to West 5th Street to near Mohawk College.

The main cycling route will start at Hunter Street and stretch all the way to Brantdale Avenue at West 5th. The route will include different connections, sidewalks and trails. Some of these trails include the Bruce Trail and a multi-use trail to St. Joseph’s Drive.

The estimated cost of this project is about $2.1 million and it’s Hamilton’s responsibility to pay 20% of the cost.

The addition of bike lanes will make for a more inclusive Hamilton. Both cyclists and motorists can enjoy their commutes feeling safer than ever before.

What do you think about the addition of bike lanes up the Claremont Access? Would you use these lanes? Let us know in the comments.
