New Johnny Reid musical sees world premiere at Hamilton’s Theatre Aquarius

Hamilton is about to play host to the world premiere of a brand-new Canadian musical with a score co-written by Scottish-Canadian recording artist Johnny Reid.

Maggie opens this week at Hamilton’s Theatre Aquarius, featuring an 18-person cast of some of Canada’s most exciting musical theatre performers, from new talent to established veterans of the stage.

With music by Johnny Reid, Matt Murray, and Bob Foster; book and lyrics by Matt Murray and Johnny Reid; and direction by Mary Francis Moore, Maggie follows the titular character from 1954 to 1976 as she raises three boys as a single mother amid life in the mining town of Lanarkshire, Scotland.

The story is a close one for Reid, serving as a soulful tribute to his Granny and to “the people of an almost forgotten generation.”

It’s rare to see an exciting original musical take shape here in Hamilton, and Maggie promises to be as rollicking and rousing as it is moving.

Maggie begins performances at Theatre Aquarius (190 King William Street) on April 19th and runs through to May 6th. See more information and grab tickets here

Johnny Reid has been a part of life musically for many years. He is right up there with John Denver as a songwriter and his voice is wonderful. I can only imagine that this endeavor will be wonderful as well.
