The Ontario government is making a sizeable investment in a more sustainable, eco-friendly approach to steel production in Hamilton.
Premier Doug Ford has announced up to $500 million in loans and grants to help Hamilton’s ArcelorMittal Dofasco switch from coal-burning coke ovens to electric arc furnaces and other ‘green steel’ infrastructure; an important step in the global fight against climate change.

This comes on top of an existing $400 million investment from the federal government that was announced last summer; part of a nation-wide project worth nearly $1.8 billion to eliminate coal-fired steelmaking; a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
“This is a transformative investment that will mean a great leap forward allowing for a massive reduction in carbon emissions which is so important given that we are in a climate emergency,” reads a statement from Mayor Fred Eisenberger.
“It will also mean a massive reduction in air pollution that has affected our bayfront and beach strip communities for over a hundred years.”
The major project is expected to create upwards of 2,500 construction jobs in Hamilton, and ensure job security for ArcelorMittal Dofasco employees for the long-term future.
