Speed limits are being reduced in parts of Hamilton this week

Hamilton City Council is putting forth plans to start reducing the speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h and school zones to 30 km/h in residential neighbourhoods this week.
New signs and posted speed limits will be changed in 45 Hamilton neighbourhoods each year over the next three years, starting with the Ainslie Woods neighbourhood. The signs with the adjusted speed limits will be posted on either side of the road like a gateway into the neighbourhood.
Beginning this week, posted speed limits within select residential neighbourhoods are dropping from 50km/hr to 40km/hr, and to 30km/hr in school zones.

In a press release, the city stated that speeding is one of the contributing factors in the cause and severity of collisions. The changes to the speed limits are part of achieving the city’s goal to change driver behaviour and protect vulnerable pedestrians by enforcing a safer speed limit across the city.
Pedestrians have a 41 per cent greater chance of survival if they are struck by a car moving 40 km/h rather than 50 km/h. Drivers who are moving slower also have more time to react, and a slower moving vehicle requires less distance to stop.
“The City receives approximately 700 requests annually from residents concerned with speeding and dangerous driving on residential roads,” said Edward Soldo, the Director of Transportation Operations and Maintenance at Hamilton Public Works.
“Servicing these requests on a case by case basis is costly and inefficient, so implementing speed limit reductions on a neighbourhood basis allows us to meet the safety needs of residents quicker.”
Hamilton City Council approved the Hamilton Strategic Road Safety and Vision Zero Action Plan back in February. The plan identified the need to reduce speed limits on residential roads and school zones.
