The Rhythms of Time

Consider the earth an orchestra, and the common good it’s conductor.
Let the overarching melody be life, the baton’s tempo the sun, and the recurring counterpoint the seasons.
Within the atmospheric orchestra pit, everything is cradled, including the winds. At the planet’s skin, elements cycle in and out of living organisms sustained by water, our planet’s blood. From those biotic life forms emerge infi- nite diversity. Just one fine strand forms the string section.
Trees are the hair, vegetation the lungs, rivers the veins, and nature’s sacred balance the heartbeat.
The soul is the score, in dimensions beyond measure. The orgy of senses – sight, touch, smell, sound and taste reach a frenzy of infinite combinations. When considered, time, imagination, intuition and conscience add a whole new vibration to the equation. Diversity reaches a crescendo then diminuendo with the tide of each evolving landscape.
Each life ego is but a note in the score, which together forms the whole rainbow. This bigger mosaic can be called the eco. Within that eco, we understand that the self, the me, is part of that greater whole, the we.
Imagine the largest orchestra with the greatest choir, producing the most profound sounds, from thunder to the deepest silence. For silence does make the music, does it not? The greatest story is that untold, is it not? That is our wonderful world, with diversity in each essence the unwavering sinew, and versatility, the ligament that con- nects all. In contrast, the yin yang provides counterbalance.
Although my life is but one swing of a pendulum, it is critical, for I am, like you, a momentary guardian of the earth. My life counts, and does make a difference.
When synchronicity is lost, harmonic dissonance occurs. The conductor and natural rhythm are misaligned. The balance is lost.
We are teetering on that precarious edge at this very moment. The conductor, our common good, is screaming for our attention, but we are not paying attention.
We, the earth’s muscle, instead protect ourselves in self-absorption. A sobering denial empty and shallow, like the bulging weight lifter’s reflection in the mirror or the swing of a golf club when a much bigger game is ignored.
That much bigger game is a healthy planet in which we can survive, and a collective maturity to stand united and do something about it. An acknowledgement that our common interests dwarf any slivers of difference is a recurring theme.
Over the last centuries, we’ve seen movements that have toppled many systemic pillars of formal discrimination. These include slavery, women’s voting rights, and equality in religious and ethnic backgrounds.
Of late, though we’ve seen a shift in respect for the rights of individuals to make personal choices. Bullying of any type is no longer tolerated, and has allowed for free expression of sexual orientiation and gender choices. This sensitivity includes people, pets and the treatment of wild animals.
As integrity becomes a keystone of society, many have fallen without remorse. This includes Lance Armstrong (steroids) and Conrad Black (fraud). Jian Ghomeshi and Bill Cosby stand quietly in line. Notice that all are men?
The real shift that Pope Francis calls for is one of moral responsibility. So does Naomi Klein in her book on climate: “This Changes Everything”.
It will. As climate realities set in, gold bars and off-shore tax havens will be trivial compared to the challenges facing earthlings. They will ask, however, why so many stood on the sidelines, when serious issues stared us in the face.
When that internal moral compass does shift, actions will change. Simpler and kinder communities will result. Being a billionaire will be a sign of moral poverty within the decade.
It’s happening. Cecil the Lion is a metaphor for the creatures, oceans, environment, trees and future that we’re destroying collectively through our personal choices. The world has reacted strongly to Cecil’s loss, but let’s be honest, this has been happening for decades. However, it may be a turning point in the great movement before us. It’s time to take the biggest journey, and that is within. Therein lies the courage to look up at the conductor, and rise united.
Shift from me to we. See ego as part of the eco. Choose green before greed.
After all, life is about what we give, not what we get. It’s time to face the music and start living that way. That would be music to all ears.
